What is Negativity Bias & how do you overcome it?

Updated: May 23, 2023

Negativity bias is a psychological phenomenon that refers to the tendency for people to give more weight to negative experiences, emotions, and information than positive ones. This bias can impact various aspects of our lives, including how we perceive others, how we make decisions, and how we respond to different situations.

There are several ways to overcome negativity bias, including:

Awareness: The first step to overcoming negativity bias is to become aware of it. Recognise when negative thoughts or emotions are taking over and try to shift your focus to more positive aspects.

Gratitude: Practicing gratitude can help shift your focus to positive experiences and emotions. Take time each day to reflect on the things you are grateful for, no matter how small they may seem.

Positive self-talk: Challenge negative self-talk by replacing it with positive affirmations. Reframe negative thoughts into more positive ones and focus on your strengths and accomplishments.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing, can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions. This can help you recognise when negativity bias is taking over and give you the tools to refocus on positive aspects.

Social support: Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Having a strong social support system can help you stay positive and overcome negativity bias.

Overall, overcoming negativity bias requires a conscious effort to shift your focus to positive aspects of life. It may take time and practice, but with patience and persistence, it is possible to retrain your brain to focus on the positive.

A Life Coach can also help you overcome Negativity Bias or at least reduce the frequency and severity of it if it's impacting your life.
